Shakur Stevenson could soon face a tough business call if the WBO installs Raymond Muratalla as his mandatory challenger at 140 pounds. Taking that fight means accepting real physical risk without the massive financial windfall tied to bouts against Devin Haney, Ryan Garcia, or Gervonta Davis.
Top Rank took the first step by petitioning the sanctioning body to elevate their top-ranked contender. A petition doesn’t make the fight a done deal, yet it instantly forces the question of whether Shakur actually wants the matchup if it gets ordered.
Nobody can say Shakur is running just yet. At the same time, wanting to wear a world title strap and wanting the specific challenger standing behind it are completely separate things.
Muratalla brings zero box office power compared to the superstars Shakur keeps calling out. The challenger hits hard enough to turn lights out, but that kind of heavy-handed grit rarely guarantees a huge network budget or career-best purse. Without any clear financial guarantees on the table, Stevenson would effectively be asked to accept a discounted payday for a fight that could destroy his road to far bigger money.
That threat doesn’t mean Muratalla has to outbox the champion for twelve rounds. Stevenson could easily control long stretches with his southpaw jab, footwork, and outside defense. Still, he would need to stay locked in every second Muratalla steps inside to plant his feet. One slip against a true puncher wipes out entire rounds of clean boxing.
Defending the belt carries obvious perks for Shakur. He retains his hardware, adds a legitimate scalp to his resume, and silences critics who would otherwise claim he ducked the division’s toughest boogeyman. Chasing mega-fights with Haney, Garcia, or Tank always involves tricky promotional hurdles and clashing timelines. A hypothetical super-fight puts no cash in the bank until ink hits paper.
If a genuine blockbuster offer surfaces right as the WBO issues a firm order, dropping the title becomes a very real temptation. Shakur would take heat from fans for walking away from an elite challenger, but boxing remains a business first.
Holding that WBO belt helps Stevenson sell himself as the top dog at light welterweight. If Muratalla gets named mandatory, holding onto the hardware means taking a fight where the physical risk completely outweighs the financial reward. Until Shakur puts his signature on a bout agreement, nobody should be shocked if that belt suddenly loses its shine.
