Super bantamweight Daniel III Cortez (14-1, 9 KOs) edged Joshua “Spotlight” Montoya (8-6-2, 1 KO) by split decision. Two judges scored it 58-56 for Cortez, while the third favored Montoya by the same score. Cortez entered as the favorite but had to work for the victory against an opponent who kept the contest close.
Cortez’s busier work helped him in the third round, although Montoya came on toward the end of it. Neither fighter scored a knockdown, leaving the judges to separate them after six competitive rounds.
Montoya made a strong case for the decision, with ringside observer Francisco Salazar scoring the fight 58-56 in his favor. Cortez ultimately secured his 14th professional victory, but the divided scorecards reflected how little separated the two fighters.
Lightweight Samuel “Sammy” Contreras (9-0, 3 KOs) remained unbeaten with a six-round unanimous decision over Oscar Pedroza Padilla (8-3-1, 3 KOs). All three judges scored it 60-54 for Contreras, who controlled most of the action.
Contreras punished Pedroza Padilla through the first three rounds, leaving the Mexican fighter struggling to find an answer. Pedroza Padilla rallied in the fourth, getting inside and landing enough shots to draw a response from the crowd. Contreras regained control in the fifth, delivering more punishment and stopping his opponent from building on that success.
The fight went the distance without a knockdown, giving Contreras his ninth professional victory.
Joseph Almajdi (6-1, 3 KOs) handed Miqal Dolphus (6-1-1, 4 KOs) his first professional defeat, winning a six-round unanimous decision in their junior middleweight bout. All three judges scored the opening preliminary contest 60-54 for Almajdi.
Using his height and reach, Almajdi established distance with his jab and followed with straight right hands. Dolphus pressed forward and attacked the body, trying to get inside the taller fighter’s reach.
The middle rounds brought lively action, with Dolphus finding some success but Almajdi producing the cleaner work. Almajdi’s footwork and timing helped him control the distance often enough to sweep the scorecards.
Neither fighter scored a knockdown, with Almajdi earning his sixth professional victory and Dolphus going the distance despite struggling to impose his pressure.
