Coming out to bat on Day 2 with England at 251 for 4, Root was eager to reach his century. When Jasprit Bumrah bowled a full delivery swinging away outside off stump, Root went for a drive that took a thick edge and raced past the gully for four. The crowd at Lord’s erupted as Root crossed his 37th Test hundred, surpassing legends like Rahul Dravid and Steve Smith. Celebrating with a leap and a fist pump, Root showed his joy and determination.

Root’s innings was vital in steadying England’s innings after a cautious start on Day 1. The team chose a patient, traditional approach on a pitch favoring bowlers. Root displayed great composure, playing carefully and building his score slowly without taking unnecessary risks. His partnership with Ben Stokes helped stabilize the innings after early wickets. By rotating the strike and defending well, Root frustrated the Indian attack and set a solid foundation for England’s progress in the match.

The joy of Root’s century was quickly overshadowed as Bumrah unleashed a devastating spell. He first bowled Stokes with a perfectly pitched delivery that swung back sharply, catching Stokes off guard and knocking over his off stump. Bumrah’s precise bowling left the crowd stunned as he continued to trouble the English batsmen. Soon after, Bumrah trapped Root by bowling a fuller ball that moved in just enough to take the inside edge and hit the stumps. Not stopping there, he then claimed Chris Woakes, who was caught behind after a successful review confirmed a faint nick. Bumrah’s fiery burst dismantled England’s batting lineup, swinging the momentum firmly in India’s favour.
