Jermell Charlo’s choice of Brock Jarvis reveals the modest ambitions of his ring return. After more than three years away, the former undisputed 154-pound champion booked a matchup designed for him to win. Jarvis brings genuine power, yet the two premier opponents on his resume stopped him inside four combined rounds. Keith Thurman did it at age 36 while shaking off a three-year hiatus himself.
Charlo (35-2-1, 19 KOs) meets Jarvis (23-2, 21 KOs) across ten rounds at middleweight. The bout serves as the co-feature to Tim Tszyu’s clash with Erislandy Lara at Cbus Super Stadium on Australia’s Gold Coast, streaming on DAZN on December 12. For Charlo, it marks his first live action since dropping a lopsided decision to Canelo Alvarez up at super middleweight in September 2023.
Thurman had sat out since 2022 prior to taking on Jarvis in March 2025. Even as an older veteran operating well past his peak, Thurman needed just three rounds to dismantle the Australian. Any thought that ring rust might leave Thurman vulnerable vanished instantly.
Before that, Liam Paro served as the only world-level name on Jarvis’s ledger, wiping him out inside a single round back in October 2022. While Jarvis rebounded from the Thurman defeat by halting the undefeated Sam Beck in four rounds last August, his record against elite opposition remains telling. His 21 knockouts look great on paper, but that power evaporates against seasoned champions.
“I’m willing to fight on a co-main event all the way in Australia because that’s how hungry I am,” Charlo said.
Charlo publicly aims for a belt in a second division, yet this booking proves he wants an easy touch before testing ranked 160-pound contenders. During his peak run, Charlo broke down Tony Harrison in the 11th round to reclaim his WBC strap, then stopped Brian Castaño in the 10th round of their rematch to unify all four belts. He excelled at solving dangerous, technical operators who gave him early fits. Jarvis has never proven he can force an elite boxer into those kinds of adaptations.
The card placement carries plenty of irony. Charlo sits beneath Tszyu, who was originally scheduled to challenge him for the undisputed crown before a hand injury forced Charlo out in early 2023. Tszyu now gets to headline for a middleweight belt against Lara, leaving Charlo to rebuild on the undercard.
An early night would deliver Charlo the tune-up he wants while setting him up for serious contenders. However, if Jarvis manages to hang around or steal rounds late, everyone will see that Charlo has lost a step. Thurman barely needed to dip into his old toolbox to erase Jarvis, setting a clear bar for what Charlo must do.
Jarvis is custom-made for the showcase. He is an aggressive puncher with zero defense against elite competition, which makes him the perfect target to get starched inside three or four rounds. Once Jermell produces a highlight-reel knockout, his team can blast the clip across social media, erase the memory of the toothless Canelo performance, and sell the illusion that the old, ferocious Charlo is fully back.
From there, the real target board is tiny. If Tszyu beats Lara, an Australia stadium showdown between Tszyu and Charlo carries built-in promotional heat from their canceled 2023 meeting, and Main Event/No Limit Boxing will back up an armored truck full of cash to stage it.
If Tszyu falls through, Ennis is the next logical target. Boots has been hunting for an established, marquee American name to build a pay-per-view around, and Charlo offers name value without the lethal threat of an active prime champion. Beyond those two, nobody in or around 154 to 160 moves the needle financially to justify the risk.
Jermell wants the reward without running the gauntlet against young, hungry killers. Knocking out Jarvis is simply the paid audition to secure the bag.
