    Swiatek speaks, on-court

I just want to play my game. I felt good on court, and thought i’m just trying to do what I plan to.

I’m happy that I did that well, and I’m through.

On her plans for her day off:

Practicing pretty early, then I can spend the whole day chilling. Nothing special, I just go to the park, do some Legos, read a book, and not watch too many TV shows, because then i have weird dreams.

I have to stick to the things which calm me down. Paris is beautiful, so just walking outside is having a nice experience.

On chasing her fifth French Open – and fourth-consecutive:

I love playing here. This place inspires me, it makes me work harder. I’m sure having time off beforehand helped me too.

    Swiatek beats Raducanu, 6-1, 6-2

Quite the baptism of fire for Raducanu on Philippe-Chatrier, a court she may not want to return to in a hurry. Swiatek races to the finish line, bringing up match point with a jaunty backhand volley which smacks the net cord and falls fortuitously on the right side.

A second backhand winner, and it’s game, set, and match!

A blistering performance from Swiatek, but she didn’t even need her highest gear to overcome a slightly lost-looking Raducanu.

    Break! Raducanu* 1-6, 2-5 Swiatek

Swiatek is back in full swing here, with the end in sight and three break points clenched in her fist.

Raducanu slows the march with an ace, which Swiatek calls the umpire down to dispute – in vain. Swiatek then bludgeons a backhand into the net, screaming at herself in Polish with frustration.

But it’s only 30-40. With a sliding return, Swiatek gets her break after just a moment’s hold up.

    Tennis Ball
    Poland

    Raducanu 1-6, 2-4 Swiatek*

On the heels of a promising note from Raducanu, Swiatek is able to wrench any scant momentum she might have won back.

The Polish player claims the game to love.

    Expert Say

This isn’t a total disaster, writes Matthew Lambwell from Paris

Raducanu is not imploding out there, she simply does not have the weight of shot to contend with Swiatek.

Swiatek has been vulnerable this year but most of her defeats have come to big hitters – Keys, Ostapenko, Collins – you need to play fast and straight, rush her on the forehand. That is just not Raducanu’s game and it is difficult to see how she can go about improving this matchup.

    Raducanu* 1-6, 2-3 Swiatek

There are errors creeping into Swiatek’s game, but Raducanu may be too far gone to make them count, as she attemps a deep cross-court forehand winner that flies into the tramlines, 30-40.

Raducanu is handed a get-out-of-jail-free (for now) card when Swiatek nets her backhand, and builds on it with a cantering forehand down-the-line to gain the advantage.

Swiatek sends a blustery backhand return to Raducanu – but it flies out! Raducanu has a crucial hold.

    Tennis Ball
    Poland

    Raducanu 1-6, 1-3 Swiatek*

Raducanu runs impotently across the baseline trying to predict Swiatek’s forehand, but can’t read the future as the forehand winner lands in the postage stamp at the back of the court, 15-0. Raducanu gets on the board this time with a fine-line backhand that Swiatek thinks about disputing. But it was in, unlike Swiatek’s ensuing forehand to bring up 15-30.

An ace rights things, but after a double fault, Raducanu has a chance for break back point. Coach Mark Petchey in her box is caught rubbing his eyes, unwittingly in disbelief. But do not adjust your sets: regular programming has returned, as Swiatek smacks a pitch perfect forehand down the line for deuce.

Another double fault, here, and another chink of light Raducanu, who has the first advantage.

She can’t claim it, but Swiatek has gone curiously off here, dishing out an array of errors to a likely bewildered Raducanu, in touching distance of a break having done very little to adjust her level. The pair exchange deuce and advantage, game suddenly up for debate.

In the end, Swiatek knuckles down and pulls off the hold.

    Break! Raducanu* 1-6, 1-2 Swiatek

Raducanu’s serve is presents no obstacle to Raducanu, who breaks her to love despite a confident rush to the net from the Briton. Unfortunately for her, Swiatek gets her with a low shot that appears to almost shoot through her legs. This is the most vulnerable Raducanu has looked today, certainly.

Speaking of nutmegging, there’s a fellow sports star taking in the action in Paris: Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo.

    Tennis Ball
    Poland

    Raducanu 1-6, 1-1 Swiatek*

Clever net play from Swiatek leaves Raducanu flummoxed on the baseline, her fifth net point of the game to the Briton’s zero.

Her ace makes it a hold to love, although Raducanu calls the umpire down from his chair to examine the mark. No opportunity for a gain squandered, I suppose.

    Tennis Ball
    Great Britain

Second set: Raducanu* 1-6, 1-0 Swiatek

A game on the board early doors in this set, as Raducanu avoids the 6-1, 6-0 curse of Melbourne.

This opening game is, dare I say, unlikely to trouble Swiatek, who looked like she was moving in to swipe the hold from 40-15 down until Raducanu’s forceful winner.

    Tennis Ball
    Poland

Swiatek claims the first set, 6-1 Raducanu

The phrase ‘business as usual’ is empty with usage but there’s little else to say. While Raducanu might feel aggrieved not to have claimed a game or two more, particularly in the opening stages, Swiatek is the master of Philippe-Chatrier and Raducanu is powerless in the face of her march towards the later stages of the tournament.

She seals her confident hold with an ace, and that’s the first set, everyone.

Raducanu will have to work something out in the second, to avoid an unfortunate duplicate of their last meeting.

PARIS, FRANCE - MAY 28: Emma Raducanu of Great Britain competes against Iga Swiatek of Poland during the Women's Singles Second Round match on Day Four of the 2025 French Open at Roland Garros on May 28, 2025 in Paris, France. (Photo by Mustafa Yalcin/Anadolu via Getty Images)
    Tennis Ball
    Poland

    Break! Raducanu* 1-5 Swiatek

I fear Raducanu fans are about to get flashbacks to Melbourne. Swiatek is on top of everything Raducanu can dish at her as she dances across the court, letting a backhand winner just meet the line to claim break point after barely breaking a sweat.

Raducanu eyes a moonball, attempting a winner, but she balloons the ball into the tramlines. Not what she needs, as she’s broken again.

    Tennis Ball
    Poland

    Raducanu 1-4 Swiatek*

Swiatek’s forehand is lightning quick, and as much as Raducanu attempts to force play away from it, the defending champion is in her pomp as another shot flashes past Raducanu, 30-15.

Next time, it’s a backhand winner as Swiatek harnesses the wind and a serve that draws Raducanu onto the baseline, and brings up game point.

But Raducanu isn’t throwing in the towel just yet, as she feasts on a second serve and bullets a forehand over the net out of reach of her opponent, 40-30.

Bringing up deuce, Swiatek claims the first advantage when Raducanu hits her deeply struck return long, and Swiatek has the hold when she bungles the next one into the net.

Swiatek is looking diamond sharp – and Raducanu is only able to match her game total from their last meeting for now.

    Break! Raducanu* 1-3 Swiatek

Swiatek might be the reigning queen of Paris, but Raducanu isn’t light on support, with fans inside the admittedly sparsely populated Philippe-Chatrier calling out her name as serves her way to a 30-love lead.

But the Polish star is pushing now, and forces a ropey backhand from the Briton, 30-all. Her next attempt at a response flies off the top of the racket wildly into the stands, bringing up break point.

Raducanu gets extremely unlucky with the net cord, her final backhand striking it – and falling the wrong side of it.

    Tennis Ball
    Poland

    Raducanu 1- 2 Swiatek*

Swiatek’s lethal forehand streaks past Raducanu on the baseline to put her ahead from the off, but the Briton is on the front foot as she looks to get on top of her opponent’s more timid second serve.

Raducanu’s forehand just kisses the tramline to draw her level at 30-30, the 22-year-old looking extremely up for the fight as things stand.

But after a gruelling rally, Swiatek just gets the batter of Raducanu cross-court on the run with a punchy backhand that bypasses her, 40-30. Swiatek can claim the hold when Raducanu hits long.

    Raducanu* 1-1 Swiatek

After giving Swiatek some food for thought in the opening game, Raducanu shows her mettle on serve, dishing her opponent a whizzing ace to claim a 40-15 lead.

An attempt at a beautifully sliced backhand dropshot to snooker Swiatek just lands on the wrong side of the net, letting the defending champion in an inch but Raducanu claims the hold by forcing Swiatek into deep backhand hitting until she goes wide.

‘Come on!’ she screams, getting the blood pumping.

    First set: Raducanu 0-1 Swiatek*

Swiatek elects to serve, and gets on the board after initially hitting long with an ace, 15-15.

A springy forehand winner fizzes just shy of the tramlines to put her ahead – but anything you can do, thinks Raducanu, as she moves up the court and pops a forehand past Swiatek.

Swiatek double faults, putting Raducanu ahead again, but Swiatek’s laser-point serve forces a gentle return from her opponent allowing her to pounce with a lethal backhand for deuce.

Another whippy forehand from Swiatek bypasses Raducanu for the advantage, and the Polish star oversees a relatively clean hold thereafter. We’re off to the races in Paris.

Mark Petchey is in position for this one – in the smart shirt and trousers of his day job as a TNT Sports commentator, rather than coach’s tracksuit.

Raducanu’s coach missed her first match against Xinyu Wang because he was on air.

The players are out on Philippe-Chatrier

Raducanu heads out first in a different outfit to the cream set she was wearing against Wang Xinyu – she’s in suitably Parisian rust this time. Swiatek continues to wear her On Running Roland-Garros set, which is always redolent, to me, of a Lost Mary vape.

Swiatek wins the coin toss, and they get down to the business of the warm-up. Minutes to go until we’re underway in the French capital.

    Britwatchers, look away now

Raducanu will not be spending too much time dwelling on the past – she has won none of her past four meetings with Swiatek, with their last entanglement at a Grand Slam making uncomfortable reading.

Swiatek downed the former US Open champion 6-1, 6-0 at the Australian Open earlier this year.

On the subject of improving your game

The Functional Tennis Saber is a precision training tool that helps players improve their consistency, timing, and contact point by demanding clean, focused strokes. It also works brilliantly as a warmup tool or for isolating and sharpening specific elements of your game like footwork, balance, and clean ball striking.

And the Saber has a few high-profile fans. including former British No1 Cam Norrie. Norrie enjoyed his first top 10 win since spring 2024 yesterday against Daniil Medvedev, which is quite the review…

Since Miami, Raducanu has been working with Andy Murray’s former coach – and current Tennis Channel pundit – Mark Petchey. And while the relationship is already paying dividends on the Briton’s least favourite surface, Petchey was the first to admit there’s still work for her to do.

Alzaraz books his spot in the third round

In the end, Alcaraz’s class tells against the tricksy Hungarian, and he despatches him with relative ease, 6-1, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.

Mats Wilander asks the genial Spaniard whether he always has fun playing tennis (he certainly looks like he does):

Most of the time! I sometimes, it’s difficult to have fun on the court, I suffer – it depends on the opponent.

But most of the time I really try to enjoy being on the court. Philippe-Chatrier is a very beautiful court, so I have to enjoy and try not to think about anything else.

I want to make people happy, and that’s the way i enjoy playing tennis.

    On playing on Roland-Garros’ showcourt:

I love it. I had really great things in this court, bad moments as well which I learn from, but I love playing here.

He then leads the crowd in a round of their favourite chant. A showman through and through.

Last time out for Swiatek and Raducanu

The Briton had the tougher time of it in her first-round match-up, battling through three sets against Wang Xinyu in a finely poised tie which spoke to their respective positions as world No41 and No43.

Raducanu was also forced to battle through ill-health, taking a medical timeout at the end of the first set. Although her level dipped in the second, she showed admirable grit to see out the win, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 – and her toil wasn’t without impressive moments.

Swiatek – who has received a troublesome-looking draw – had a much more routine return to her favourite court Philippe-Chatrier, beating Rebecca Sramkova 6-3, 6-3.

    Good afternoon!

Hello and welcome to Mail Sport’s live coverage of Emma Raducanu’s second-round clash with French Open defending champion Iga Swiatek.

The doyenne of clay will prove a fearsome prospect for the former US Open winner, but after a promising season on clay, and playing with the freedom of a massive underdog, could Raducanu pull off the upset of the tournament?

If she does – or even, if she doesn’t – we’ll be here to cover every game, and in the mean-time, all the build-up and news from around Roland-Garros to get you in the mood.

On Court Philippe-Chatrier, the preceding match is reaching its likely crescendo, with another defending champion in Carlos Alcaraz two sets and 4-2 up in the fourth against Fabian Marozsan.
