Manchester United have been linked with a move for Borussia Monchengladbach star Marcus Thuram ahead of the winter transfer window.
Marcus Thuram, 25, who is currently with France at the World Cup in Qatar, has enjoyed an impressive season with Borussia Monchengladbach, registering 10 goals and three assists in 15 Bundesliga appearances. The forward’s top form has seen clubs from the Premier League and Europe, including Inter Milan and Juventus, register their interest in landing him next year.
While Thuram’s contract at the Borussia-Park is up in the summer, meaning he would be available as a free agent, Manchester United could make an attempt to sign the France international in January after his World Cup commitments.
Erik ten Hag is desperate for attacking reinforcements
It is no secret that Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is seeking attacking reinforcements during the January transfer window.
The Red Devils terminated Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract through mutual consent with immediate effect on Tuesday after his stinging sit-down interview with Piers Morgan. Ronaldo’s unceremonious exit from the club means Ten Hag’s attacking weapons has reduced, thus, leaving him with Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Jadon Sancho, Antony, Anthony Elanga and young Alejandro Garnacho.
Martial has endured another injury-hit campaign at Old Trafford, while Sancho’s firm has seen a major dip after a bright start to the 2022/23 season. Garnacho is on his way to enjoying a breakthrough campaign at Man United, but Ten Hag knows he cannot expect consistent performances from the teenager week in and week out. In addition, Rashford is out of contract in the summer of 2023.
Thus, it is quite evident that Ten Hag needs to bring in a forward in the New Year to not only compensate for Ronaldo’s departure but also boost Man United’s chances of qualifying for the Champions League.
Marcus Thuram would be a good fit at Old Trafford
Man United have struggled for goals this season, scoring just 20 times in 14 games—which is less than the likes of Newcastle United, Brighton, Fulham, Brentford, Leeds United and Leicester City. As a result, they could definitely do with some more quality in the final third, and Marcus Thuram would be a top addition to Ten Hag’s side.
Thuram has been a star performer for Borussia Monchengladbach over the last two years, and it’s led to him being linked a few times with moves to bigger clubs, though, one has yet to materialise. Standing at 6ft 4ins tall, the 25-year-old is an intimidating presence in the box for the opposition and can score goals of all kinds. He is a composed finisher in front of the goal and can play anywhere across the forward line, which could massively benefit the Red Devils. Also due to his heading ability and physicality, the France international will provide a different dimension to Ten Hag’s attack.
As Gladbach are seemingly ready to sell Thuram for as little as £10m in the upcoming window rather than lose him on a free transfer in June, Man United must try their best in securing his signature.
