Los Cabos | Medvedev and Norrie clear first hurdles

Cameron Norrie is the sole Brit competing at the Abierto de Tenis Mifel tournament in Los Cabos, Mexico, where he is the third seed in the ATP Tour 250 level event.

It’s definitely not that easy to play after you stop for a while, especially (playing my) first match on hard courts since a long, long time — since Miami, Daniil Medvedev

And while the British No.1 and world No12 got off to a good start with a 6-3 6-0 demolition of Taipei’s Chun-Hsin Seng, the major focus of interest fell on the top seeded and world No.1, Daniil Medvedev, playing his first match in six weeks having been banned from competing at Wimbledon as a result of his country’s invasion of the Ukraine.

He opened his campaign comfortably with a 6-4 6-3 win over 21-year-old Australian qualifier Rinky Hichikata in what was the US Open champion’s 250th victory on the Tour.

“Someone told me this a few days ago,” Medvedev said after the match. “Otherwise, I would not have known. That’s nice, a milestone in a way.

“I want more victories, but that’s nice to have 250. We’ll try to get more. I have to play like this in the next matches.”

Having won the first set with the only break of that set, Medvedev then saved the first break point he faced in the opening game of the second and took control when he converted a break point for a 4-2 lead and then holding on for the win after 90-minutes of play.

“It’s definitely not that easy to play after you stop for a while, especially (playing my) first match on hard courts since a long, long time — since Miami,” Medvedev added.

“Sensations were not bad. I could have just broke a little bit more, but when you win everything is fine.”

Medvedev next faces Ricardas Berankis of Lithuania, who beat Argentina’s Facundo Bagnis 7-6(4) 6-3.

Second-seeded Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime also advanced, beating Mexico’s Alex Hernandez 6-3 7-5.
