Serena Williams participation in this year’s Wimbledon came to an abrupt end in the first round. The American playing in her first singles event since Wimbledon 2021 faltered in a 3 hour match eventually going down in the 3rd set championship tiebreaker.

It was a match in which many expected Serena to win despite her lack of match practice. Harmony Tan had other ideas as she took the first set 7-5 with a lovely combination of slice and power. Serena came back in the second set dominating her opponent to take it to a third set. It looked as if the tide was turning when Serena went a break up early on but Tan fought back much to the delight of the Centre Court crowd. Eventually they edged towards the breaker. Serena went racing ahead to 4 0 only to be pegged back by Tan. It was a ding dong battle that neither player really went out to win. Eventually Tan held firm following an extended rally which forced Serena to hit a forehand topspin into the net.
