Floods have occurred in Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and Kochbihar districts of North Bengal in West Bengal. The water of the rivers in these areas is flowing over the danger zone. Dams have broken in multiple places. Crop fields are ruined. Shelters have been opened in many places. Many tourists are stranded in the floods.
Among the districts of North Bengal, Alipurduar is adjacent to Bhutan. Due to heavy rains in Bhutan, large areas of Alipurduar have been submerged due to rising water levels in the rivers there. Extreme rainfall has also caused landslides in the mountains.
Alipurduar is one of the tourist destinations in West Bengal. Many tourists are stuck here when they come to visit Buxa hill. Yesterday, these tourists were taken down from the hills and given shelter in the flood shelters set up in various government schools in the plains.
Meanwhile, a river dam in Alipurduar broke and flooded, causing floods in various areas. A slum of Bhutia in Jayanti area here has been flooded. Bobby Lama, head of the Rajabhatkhawa gram panchayat, said if the rains continued, the entire town would be submerged.
Tourists have been rescued from a tourist guest house in Jayanti area and brought to Alipurduar. The water of Kaljani river flowing from the side of Alipurduar town is flowing over the danger zone. As a result, many adjacent areas have been flooded. The Bhutan Meteorological Department also said there could be another 48 hours of rain. So three thousand people of Alipurduar have been rescued and brought to the temporary shelter of Alipurduar city. The administration has said that no one should go to Buxa hill now.
On the other hand, the lower reaches of Kochbihar have already sunk. Many crop fields have been submerged. Many houses have been flooded. Many houses have been flooded by the river Raydak here. More than three hundred houses have been submerged. Shelters have been opened in various government schools here to provide shelter to the flood victims. Dry food is being provided in those shelters.
Meanwhile, the embankment of Raydak river at Boxirhat in Kochbihar broke yesterday. The dam broke and submerged Mahishkuchi village.
Floods have occurred in different areas of Jalpaiguri district. The flood is slowly taking a terrible turn as the water level of Teesta river rises here. Here also water is flowing from the hills of Sikkim into the river Teesta. The lower part of Jalpaiguri has also been submerged due to rising water level of Teesta river.
