Denny Bao and Nadia Lagaev crowned at 2022 Under 16 Fischer Outdoor National Championships

The Under 16 Fischer Outdoor National Championships wrapped up today in Milton, Ontario at the Milton Tennis Club where 64 Canadians in both the U16 boys’ and girls’ draw battled for the national title. In the end, it was British Columbia’s No. 1 seed Denny Bao who came out on top in the boy’s draw and No. 2 seed Nadia Lagaev of Ontario who was crowned champion in the girls’ singles draws.

Bao had quite the journey to the finals, as the No. 1 seed he received a bye in the first round, moving onto the round of 32 where he defeated Ontario’s Benjamin Azar in a three-set victory 6-1, 4-6, 6-1. In the final 16 and quarter-final rounds the No. 1 seed soared past Hans Deng (6-2, 6-2), and No. 5 seed Jacob Rouleau-Mailly (6-4, 6-0) to move onto the semi-finals, where he defeated 9th seed Alex Daniel Anghel in three sets 6-0, 6-7(5), 6-2. In the championship match, Bao topped No. 3 seed Adam Faragcao in a 7-5, 6-3 victory.

In the girls’ singles draw, the championship match- up was between two Ontarians No. 2 seed Lagaev and No. 5 seed Emma Andrea Tutoveanu. In the end, Lagaev defeated Tutoveanu in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 to claim the tournament title. Lagaev did not drop a set en route to the championship title, defeating Anya Tkachyk, Havana Kadi, Emma si yu Dong and seed Raphaelle Leroux. 

In doubles, the boys’ draw was an all-Western match against No. 3 seeds Faragcao (AB) and Owen A.K. Nguyen (BC) upsetting the No. 1 seeds Kai Baerg (AB) and Bao (BC) in a close 6-4, 7-5 victory to claim the U14 Fischer National Championship title. Faragcao and Nguyen had quite the run, battling in three sets in both the quarter-final and semi-final rounds en route to the championship match. On the girls’ side, it was an all-Eastern line up with Andrea Cabio of Ontario and Clémence Mercier of Quebec defeating two Quebec natives Mariya Dobreva and Neda Rahimkhani 7-5, 6-1 to claim the girls’ doubles title.
