Ernesto Mercado Claims Jamaine Ortiz Ducks January Fight

Ernesto “Tito” Mercado accuses Jamaine Ortiz of avoiding a January fight, leaving the unbeaten light welterweight searching for opponents willing to give him the opportunity his career has needed for two years.

Mercado looks capable of troubling the best at 140, but his opportunities haven’t matched his ability. His punching power makes him dangerous, while his limited name recognition gives established opponents little financial incentive to accept that danger.

“Dat boy Jamaine just ducked for a fight in January 😂🤦‍♂️, who I do go after next🤨,” Mercado posted on X.

That is Mercado’s account. His post does not disclose the proposed purse or other terms, and Ortiz’s reason for declining has not been established.

Ortiz would provide a useful test of Mercado’s ability to handle movement and an experienced opponent who won’t simply trade with him. He also brings recognition from fights against Vasiliy Lomachenko, Teofimo Lopez and Keyshawn Davis. Davis stopped Ortiz in the 12th round on January 31.

For Ortiz, rebuilding after that defeat, Mercado could be a difficult fight to justify financially. Losing to an undefeated puncher with a smaller audience could damage his prospects without delivering a payday substantial enough to compensate. That is a possible matchmaking calculation, rather than proof of Mercado’s accusation.

Mercado’s promotional history shows how difficult securing those opportunities has become. He joined Matchroom in September 2024 but fought only twice under its banner, stopping Jose Pedraza and Antonio Moran. Canceled appearances included one caused by a hand injury and another by an overweight opponent. He signed with DMG Boxing in June after leaving Matchroom.

Even with Matchroom’s platform, Mercado remained largely outside the division’s biggest conversations. Those wins demonstrated his power, but neither produced the leading contender he needed next.

Pursuing a mandatory position may offer a more productive route than repeated callouts. An eliminator could move him toward an enforceable title opportunity, although securing one brings its own negotiations.

Mercado has spent much of the last two years showing he can hurt opponents. He now needs fights that establish how he handles the division’s best before another year passes with little progress toward a world title.
