Bowling event largest in Upstate city’s history


Officials announced on Tuesday that Greenville will host a major sports event, calling it the biggest event ever held in the city and one of the largest in South Carolina. Officials with VisitGreenvilleSC and the Greenville Convention Center are hoping the U.S. Bowling Open Championship is right up the city’s alley, after the United States Bowling Congress announced it would hold the tournament at the convention center in 2028.They made the announcement at Spare Time, located at 822 Congaree Road, where representatives from the Greenville Convention Center, VisitGreenvilleSC and the USBC bowled a frame to visualize the excitement. Officials said the event will bring more than 50,000 people to the area between March and July of that year, generating a projected $70 million economic impact.The event is prompting the construction of 60 new bowling lanes at the convention center, according to officials.When the championship is over, all the wood and wiring used to create the lanes will be donated to Habitat for Humanity to build future homes, officials said.
