The All-Ireland hurling final is being shown live on BBC 2, and it is safe to say that British viewers are extremely confused by what they are seeing.
In a pulsating first-half that ebbed and flowed, Clare and Cork are locked level at the break. It has been an exhilarating contest so far, with Cork’s Robert Downey treating us to one of the all-time great Croke Park goals.
While the BBC coverage made sure to note the quality of the goal and the game in general, much of this seems to have gone over the heads of our British friends, with some viewers taking to social media to express their confusion at the sport.

“Handball,” posted one viewer while another asked, “Which sport is this?”
“Egg and spooning from another dimension,” wrote another user, while another posted. “Egg and spoon race for adults. Not a real sport.”
Other English fans have been impressed by the sport, with one asking the BBC to show more GAA in the future: “Football last year, Hurling today. BBC really need to find a way to show more GAA. Quality games and its been fun trying to explain the rules.”
Another fan wrote: “I’m watching the All-Ireland Hurling final on the BBC at the moment. Never even heard of it. I have no idea what’s going on!!!”
He later wrote: “This needs to be on TV more I would watch the s*** out of this!!”
Another impressed viewer wrote: “Hurling. BBC a proper man’s game.”
“Watching the hurling on BBC. Know nothing about it. Fabulous stuff.”
“Really glad the Hurling is on BBC. Don’t get to watch it very often. Mental game.”
“All Ireland Hurling is on BBC One. It’s a mental sport. Like Hockey x Rugby. New one on me anyway.”
One Englishman who is certainly enjoying the game is Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher, who is at Croke Park with his Cork girlfriend Aine May Kennedy and has posed for photos with spectators at Croke Park.
